I am always on the look out for retail products suited to salon/spa environments that offer clients an opportunity to purchase something that will enhance their treatment experience/results. If your business offers skincare treatments, it stands to reason that a good skincare supplement or nutraceutical is the perfect retail add on to cross sell to your clients. Over the years, I’ve tried many different ‘skincare supplements’ that have delivered mixed results.
I recently came across a new ‘beauty supplement’ called Lumity Life, an ‘anti ageing supplement’ that claims to be the ‘first and only supplement to fight all nine causes of skin ageing from the inside out’. Lumity believe that it is their ideal balance of vitamins and minerals that delivers on this promise.
I find the subject of beauty pills and drinks, especially ones that claim to have anti-ageing benefits to be a contentious issue, one whose merits are hotly debated. Lack of clinical trials, evidence and over zealous marketing claims can leave one sceptical. I choose not to believe the hype and base my opinion on my own experiences of the product. In October I was given the opportunity to try out Lumity Life. I took the recommended daily dosage for 1 month and to give as thorough a trial as possible, I stopped taking my daily omega supplement and multi vitamin. Below I take a look at the brand, my experience of it and whether or not I think it worth retailing in your business.
Behind the Brand
The Lumity website tells us that the product has been developed by research scientist Sara Palmer Hussey to address the demands of modern life and the toll they take on our health and skin, Lumity is the result of years of research and testing, comprising of key nutrients that work together to renew and replenish our body from the inside out, resulting in nourished skin, hair and nails.
The product is presented in two separate vials of morning and night soft gel capsules.
Lumity Life is formulated to tackle the 9 causes of skin ageing, which are identified as:
- Oxidative Stress
- Cellular Debris
- Telemorer Shortening
- DNA Damage
- Cellular Energy Decline
- Insulin Resistance
- Hormonal Decline
Key Ingredients include; Flaxseed Oil, Alanine, Lysine, Glutamine, Arginine, L-Cysteine, Acelty L-Carninite, Co Q10, Tumeric, Zinc, Selenium, Magnesium, Iodine, Vit E, Vit D, Vit C and Vit A.
As you can see the supplements are a comprehensive blend of key minerals, vitamins, anti oxidants and omegas that are important for skin health and function. In an ideal world we should be getting sufficient levels of these through our natural diet, in most cases we aren’t, so supplementing with a product such as Lumity Life is a good idea. Unlike many other mass produced multi-tasking supplements they aren’t packed with unnecessary fillers or binding agents that take away from the efficacy of a supplement and render them useless.
My Experience of Lumity Life
I only took Lumity Life for 4 weeks, so it is hard for me to give a complete review in relation to the effect they had on my skin. As with any supplement, there is no such thing as immediate results. In most cases you won’t see the full on benefits of consistent daily supplementation until about the 3 month mark, this is also true of Lumity.
That is not to say I didn’t experience any benefits! What I did notice in the 4 weeks that I was taking this supplement is that I was experiencing a deeper, more restful sleep and woke with increased energy – it was about the two week mark that I noticed this shift in my sleeping pattern. Something I wasn’t really expecting was the effect it had on a hormones, which was extremely positive. My hormone induced mood swings and anxiety felt more balanced and controlled. I felt I had more mental clarity, all of which were welcomed positives. I was impressed to actually feel the supplements working and while I can’t say they did much in terms of skin related anti ageing benefits, I appreciate I didn’t give them the chance to do so.
Would I recommend Lumity Life as a Retail Addition?
From a commercial point of view I find Lumity to be a very well thought out brand. Their products are visually appealing and have serious shelf appeal, I like their branding and you can see they have invested well in their marketing and PR efforts, which drive the brand. The ever youthful Yasmin Le Bon is a vocal advocate of the brand and you will regularly see Lumity Life feature in noted publications on and offline. I found their social media to be very engaging and quick to respond to any social brand mentions or questions. From speaking with salon owners who stock this brand, I have been assured that they have only positive experiences of dealing with the company and their own clients have welcomed the brand and made repeat purchases. I would love to see some more marketing materials feature before and after shots of the ‘anti ageing’ effects of Lumity and perhaps some links to clinical evidence/research papers to back up the reported benefits of their key ingredients, which are in existence.
The price point of Lumity Life is at the higher end of the scale. Costing £90 for a month supply, it is recommended that you commit to a 3 month programme to see results. For some this can be a hard sell to clients, however with its strong brand awareness and positive feedback, I think Lumity is a great retail addition to any salon or spa who takes a serious approach to skin health and wellbeing. This multi tasking beauty supplement is the perfect upsell to clients who are seeking balance and a helping hand in addressing the signs of ageing. It should complement any home skincare prescription you offer clients. The key to retailing products like this is to highlight the benefits it will have while also managing client expectations. Immediate results are not evident (or promised), it is a progressive product whose benefits and actions can be seen accumulatively over time – the longer you take it the more benefits you will see. Lumity Life is retailed in a number of high profile and well regarded skin and beauty clinics in addition to Harrods.
